Left an item at a hotel? What to do step by step

Contact the property, describe the item, wait for confirmation and arrange collection and delivery with this step-by-step process.

Item personale dimenticato in una camera d’hotel

Realising that you left something at a hotel can be stressful, especially once you are far away. The best response is an orderly one: identify the item with the property first, then arrange collection. Booking a courier before the hotel has confirmed the find may lead to an unsuccessful collection.

1. Contact the hotel directly

Call or write to reception and include the booking name, stay dates and room number if you remember it. Use the property’s official contact details. If you booked through a travel platform, make sure the message reaches the hotel rather than remaining only inside the platform.

2. Describe the item clearly

State the type, brand, colour, size and one detail that helps staff identify it. Mention where you think it was left: the wardrobe, bathroom, safe, a socket beside the bed or the luggage room. To protect your privacy, do not publish document numbers, security codes or photographs containing sensitive information.

3. Wait for confirmation

The property needs to check the room and its lost-property record. Ask for explicit confirmation and the reference used to register the item. If it is not found immediately, leave your contact details and ask when a second check may be possible.

4. Check whether the item can be shipped

Clothing, accessories and many personal belongings can usually be handled, but some categories need additional checks. Batteries, liquids, medicines, documents, keys, fragile goods and valuables should not be treated as a standard shipment without review. Read the terms and always describe the item accurately.

5. Arrange collection, packaging and delivery

Once the find is confirmed, start the forgotten-item recovery process. Select the hotel and the closest item category, enter the delivery address and review the price. If the property or item is not listed, use the dedicated form instead of choosing inaccurate information.

6. Keep every reference

Save the hotel’s confirmation, your request number and the tracking details. Report address changes promptly. When the parcel arrives, check the packaging before discarding the documents.

A simple rule: confirmation first, shipping second

The essential step is knowing that the property actually holds the item. From that point, Ad Turista can coordinate the hotel, collection, packaging and delivery through one assisted process.

If the hotel does not reply immediately

Do not send repeated messages every few minutes. Leave one complete request with your contact details, allow a reasonable response time and try another official channel if needed. Housekeeping may not yet have transferred found items to reception. If the property is seasonal or closed, check its published hours and explain any urgency without assuming that the object has been found.

If the item has sentimental value

Describe a detail that helps identification without assigning an arbitrary financial value. A photograph taken before the stay may help the hotel recognise it. Once confirmed, ask for the object to remain associated with the reference until collection. Accurate communication is especially important for jewellery, personal keepsakes and objects that may resemble other finds.
